If you’ve been watching the news lately — or even walking through your city’s streets — you’ll know that there have been some pretty significant demonstrations following the results of the election. And while most of the protests have remained peaceful, there have been some arrests — mostly for misdemeanors like disorderly conduct — and at least one has even turned violent. But, with no signs of protests letting up, one foreign government is taking to warning its own citizens about what’s going on.
In a statement over the weekend, the Turkish foreign ministry advised its citizens to exercise caution when considering travel to the US following what it calls increasingly violent protests. Although the statement didn’t specifically mention President-elect Trump, the protests continued throughout the weekend when the statement was issued.
“Sometimes the protests turn violent and criminal while protesters (are) detained by security forces,” the ministry of foreign affairs, adding that “racists and xenophobic incidents increased in the USA.” The ministry also added that if Turkish citizens are in the country, they should stay away from protests altogether.
At this time, it appears that Turkey is the only country that’s issued a warning for its citizens who are in the US or planning to travel to the country. It’s worth noting that last month, the US State Department ordered family members of consulate employees in Istanbul to leave the country, citing increased threats to US citizens.
