Kempinski Hotels on Wednesday opened what it calls Cuba’s first five-star luxury hotel. The hotel is a redevelopment of the Manzana de Gomez building in Old Havana.
The Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana has 246 rooms ranging in size from about 450 square feet to the 1,600-square-foot presidential suite.
The property has a half-dozen restaurants and bars, including Confluencias, which serves traditional afternoon tea. Evocacion Tobacco Lounge features a selection of cigars and rums.
The hotel also has a 11,000-square-foot spa with eight treatment rooms as well as a rooftop infinity pool.
The building, which is within a Unesco World Heritage Site, opened in 1917 as Cuba’s first European-style shopping arcade. It subsequently housed government offices as well as a number of schools.
The hotel is owned by Grupo de Turismo Gaviota, which also owns the Four Points by Sheraton Havana. Last June, that hotel became the first Cuba property in almost six decades to be overseen by a U.S. hotel company.
