Is Seoul a ‘secret’ destination? Lonely Planet seems to think so

IN a recent Lonely Planet round-up of the world’s top “secret” destinations, Seoul came in second after the sunny island of Malta.

The South Korean capital is one of the most technologically advanced cities in the world. It’s also renowned for a rich culinary culture, a strong fashion sense, and is a steady frontrunner in establishing Asia’s landscape of pop culture.

Lonely Planet called Seoul one of “the hippest places to be in the world right now”, which is reflective of the capital’s ever-changing style, but not suggestive of its secretive qualities.

However, a few other sites in Asia were more suitably featured in the list. Coming in at number five is the southern islands of Cambodia, a largely unspoiled region of sand and sea.

Lombok in Indonesia was also featured, a destination that is slowly but surely converting some of Bali’s most loyal luxury travelers.

It’s also great to see India’s Shekhawati being credited, an underrated region in Rajasthan that prides itself on a mystical appeal through historical sites such as intricately designed forts and castles.

1. Malta
2. Seoul, South Korea
3. Vojvodina, Serbia
4. Stock Island/Key West, Florida
5. The Southern Islands, Cambodia
6. Ilhabela, Brazil
7. Lombok, Indonesia
8. Lost Sierra, California
9. Weerribben-Wieden National Park, Netherlands
10. Silent Green, Germany
