Zimbabwean Tourism Authority (ZTA) has requested all operators of unregistered designated tourist facilities to register.
Following an announcement by Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Priscah Mupfumira, in January, the authorities have given operators until the end of March.
“It is disheartening to note that there are a number of operators who are illegally operating and offering tourism services in contravention of the Tourism Act Chapter 14:20 of 1996. Such players are offering unfair competition to genuine tourism operators and are defrauding government of revenue. I, therefore, wish to encourage and persuade all such unregistered operators to ensure they register their tourism businesses between now and the end of March 2018,” said Minister Mupfumira.
Airbnb accommodation hosts; hotels and lodges; restaurants in and outside hotels; and hunting operators, among others, have been requested to get in touch with ZTA to register.
“Failure to comply with regulatory requirement could lead to prosecution,” ZTA said in a statement.
All designated tourist facilities that are unregistered or have lapsed licences, are therefore urged to regularise their operations as soon as possible to avoid any inconvenience.
Tourism operators had in the past complained about unregistered players in the industry, saying they were cutting into their foreign currency potential. This move to clamp down on unregistered tourism operators is expected to restore order in the sector.
