The US Food and Drug Administration gave the green light for the clinical trial of an experimental Zika vaccine named GLS-5700, which is to be tested on humans in a few weeks. It’s being developed by Inovio Pharmaceuticals and GeneOne Life Science.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been widely recognized for its quick response to the Zika crisis. GLS-5700 is one of numerous vaccines being developed to prevent Zika infection, and The National Institutes of Health is looking to test its own Zika vaccine later in 2016.
These are early-stage human trials and it’ll realistically take many more years before a fully licensed Zika vaccine comes out on the market.
The US Centers for Disease Control confirmed the link between the Zika virus and microcephaly in April, and warned pregnant women to avoid traveling to countries where Zika is rampant. The virus has spread throughout Central and South America and has now been linked to another rare, potentially life-threatening disease: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
Some researchers have asked that the Rio Olympics be postponed, but both the WHO and the International Olympic Committee have attempted to dismiss those fears. They argue that the risk of tourists contracting the Zika virus while in Brazil is miniscule.
