SINGAPORE’S Changi Airport – largely considered the best airport in the world – will begin operations on its new fourth terminal (T4) on Oct 31. The new airport tech that will be featured is expected to shape the future of air travel in Singapore.
There will also be use of tomography scanners which will allow laptops to remain in travelers’ bags during screenings.
Singapore’s Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said that the new terminal had undergone extensive trials involving 2,500 staff and 1,500 volunteers since it concluded construction last December.
Khaw said: “After endless rounds of testing and fine-tuning, we are ready to open T4… another big step forward in our journey as a global air hub.”
Nine airlines will operate out of T4 including Cathay Pacific Airways, Cebu Pacific Air, Korean Air, Spring Airlines and Vietnam Airlines. The first flight scheduled to arrive in the new terminal is Cathay Pacific Airways’ CX659.
In June, Changi Airport hit a new passenger milestone for welcoming its one billionth passenger since it began operating in 1981, keeping it on course to hit its target of 60 million passengers this year.
According to Channel News Asia, the airport handled 58.7 million passengers last year – an all-time high that looks set to be topped this year.
The airport’s new terminal is in tandem with its ambitious expansion plans to more than double its capacity by 2025 and handle over 135 million passengers a year.
