AS THE sharing economy expands across the globe, more competitors are springing up to take a share of the market.
One of the ways in which the most well-known online home-sharing platform Airbnb is doing this is by starting to offer maintenance service in private properties in Japan, The Jakarta Post reports.
Japan has a rapidly growing minpaku (private lodging services) market, which is fed by foreign visitors wanting to experience the vibrant metropolitan cities, as well as the stunning landscapes in more rural settings.
Included in the maintenance service offered in these private properties, Airbnb plans to assemble furniture, buy insurance policies, take care of all cleaning on of behalf of the owner and set up the property for the next guests.
Airbnb had difficulty securing legislation in Japan to allow private homeowners to rent out their properties. However, they gained permission in June 2017 and the market has grown ever since.
The legislation allows residents to rent out their properties for up to 180 days annually but first must register with local authorities in the area.
Japan is reportedly the most popular market in the Asia-Pacific region for Airbnb stays and helped to boost the Japanese economy by US$8.3 billion in 2016.
Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten Inc. announced in November 2017 that it will add maintenance of minpaku properties to the list of services it already provides.
According to sources, Airbnb plans to start taking inquiries for this maintenance service by the end of February.
