The largest prison strike in U.S. history continues this week, and yet the media has largely remained silent. Estimates say there are at least 20,000 prisoners from over 20 states currently on strike, demanding better conditions and an end to free prison labor. Many organizers in support of the strike argue that our prison labor system is our 21st century example of slavery in the United States. Prisoner labor produces around $2 billion of output for per year. Private corporations, like Whole Foods, often partner with prisoners in order to profit from this free labor provided by prisoners.
The strike started September 9th, and yet major media outlets have given little or no coverage to the protests.
