IN THIS VIDEO, Buzzfeed interviewed people of all races an ethnicities who struggled with accepting their skin color throughout their life. As one woman in the video agrees, “”There is something about having darker skin that shapes the way a person moves through the world. It has real-life stakes.”
People in the video recall equating their dark skin with being “poor” or “dirty.” One woman mentions the belief she learned as a child that the lighter you are, the more you’re “bettering your race and family.” Another points out how pop culture reinforces these beliefs: “In telenovelas, they always cast the dark-skinned people as the villains.”
