Airports get crowded during the holidays, travelers pack the terminals and security lines zigzag for hundreds of feet. More planes are flying in and out and jets line up one after another to ensure a timely take-off. But at Sydney Airport (SYD), the holiday congestion made things a little too close for comfort, as we can see in this installment of crazy aviation videos.
This video was filmed on January 2 — a day known for being an exceptionally busy travel time, which led to this incredible footage showing two planes on the runway at (almost) the same time. In the clip you can see a Cathay Pacific A330 taking off from the airport’s main runway. As the A330 lifts its front wheels, a JetStar Australia A320 enters the frame and starts to land. What happens next is wild — the A320’s wheels touch down just as the A330 becomes airborne. The video makes it seem as if the airplanes are within a few hundred feet of each other, but according to the Daily Mail’s report, the near simultaneous landing/takeoff is actually allowed as long as the two jets aren’t on the ground at the same time.
