The first Latina was elected to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday: Catherine Cortez Masto. She’s the granddaughter of a Mexican immigrant from Chihuahua, Mexico and the former attorney general of Nevada. She filled the seat of Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic minority leader who retired this year after thirty years in Congress. She will now join Sens. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) in the Senate.
