Students have protested since October 2015 against high tuition fees. On average, tuition at a good university costs around $3,000 a year. That’s around two thirds of the average income for a black family in the country. Many of the country’s issues in education stem from apartheid, with opportunities and resources still unequal among black and white communities. For example, whites make up over 60% of the country’s highly skilled workforce and have an average income of $28,000. Meanwhile blacks make up only 18% of the highly skilled workforce and have an average income of $5,000.
