Last week, self-described “Professional Idiot” and YouTube Vlogger Adam Saleh posted a video — called “I Smuggled Myself On A Plane to Another City and IT WORKED!!! (IN A SUITCASE)” — which appears to show him being packed into an oversized suitcase and stowing away on a Tigerair flight from Melbourne to Sydney, Australia. More than 600,000 people have watched the video since it was posted last week, but the airline isn’t laughing.
A spokesperson from Tigerair posted an open letter to Saleh’s various social media channels insisting the whole video was a hoax — and that they’ve got the security footage to prove it. Among the “little inconsistencies” the airline pointed out were that the automated bag drop where Saleh’s friends left him only allows for a maximum weight of 32 kilograms (about 70 pounds), whereas Saleh’s bag weighed more than twice that amount.
“Anything over 32kg gets reject and our friendly staff would have stepped in to assist with options, as indeed they did. We have the footage,” the airline representative retorted.
Furthermore, they added, while some baggage holds are heated, Saleh’s was not, so the fact that he’s sweating throughout the video doesn’t quite jive with the fact that the hold would have been freezing cold, possibly dipping down to a temperature of more than -60°F.
“Had you been in the baggage hold, by the time you arrived in Sydney, you would have been a popsicle,” said the airline spokesperson. “Thirdly, we have footage of you boarding the aircraft (using your legs) … Given what you have portrayed could have resulted in serious injury or worse to you and the people around you, we’d suggest you the video promptly.”
The airline told Mashable that while it appears Saleh has since hidden or deleted their letter from his social media channels, they’re not ready to drop the matter.
“Tigerair Australia has a zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior and has investigated this matter as a priority,” a spokesperson said.
As of right now, the video is still live (you can see it below) and Saleh has yet to respond to Tigerair’s complaint or request.
