Virgin Voyages will give passengers a cornucopia of audio experiences, from a vinyl record shop to a pink padded karaoke lounge to sonic signatures created for various parts of the ship.
Virgin has strong ties to the music business, from a record label founded in the 1970s to a chain of Virgin Megastore record shops that grew to hundreds of stores in the 1990s.
The cruise line will go back to the future with a Voyage Vinyl record store featuring personal listening stations as well as limited-edition curated albums and special editions of classics for sale, along with music magazines, headphones and record players.
A number of suites on the ship will come outfitted with turntables.
Voyage Vinyl will also be a dance hub, where Virgin’s line-up of celebrity DJs will spin tunes. In addition to the previously announced DJ residency with Mark Ronson, Virgin will add producer/remixer MK (Marc Kinchen) and the Grammy-nominated electronic music duo Sofi Tukker to its roster of resident DJs.
The DJs will preside on ship, in-port destinations and at the Beach Club at Bimini.
Another music venue will be called The Groupie. It is a lounge that small groups can book for karaoke, gaming and video watching.
Virgin has engaged WhiteLabel Creative, a marketing and events agency, to create a music Creative Collective that will be responsible for developing the background “sonic palettes” across the ship.
Virgin said its “sonic identity will have a home in electronic music,” but will also incorporate other music genres, ensuring that all guests will find a sound they love.
To publicize the new aural experiences, Virgin said it is hosting a takeover of the Gramps outdoor lounge and restaurant in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood during the Winter Music Conference, an annual celebration of electronic music, March 25-28.
Virgin’s first ship, the Scarlet Lady, will enter service in 2020.
