Recently, Brand USA officials confirmed that in 2017 record number of travellers from Canada visited the US. Chris Thompson, CEO, Brand USA said, “It’s our number one international market, with some 20 million visitors, the good news is that in 2017 the Canadian numbers are actually up.”
The US government figures show that 20.2 million Canadians last year visited such popular American destinations as Orlando, San Francisco, New York City and Hawaii. That is up by a solid 4.8% from 2016.
“Most of my experience prior to Brand USA was with the state of Florida,” Thompson said.
The US authorities are forecasting a 22% increase in Canadian visits by 2022. Not only travellers from Canada arrived in record numbers but they are spending huge numbers as well. A Brand USA official said that Canadians in 2016 spend USD 19.4 billion on their visits, more than one out of four international arrivals to the US in 2017 were Canadians; 25.4% in all.
It’s not a surprise given the constant increase in airlift from Canadian airports to the US destinations. Air Canada, WestJet and Porter are consistently flights to Florida, California, Hawaii and the US northeast.
Thompson confirmed that Brand USA continues to pay close attention to key markets such as Canada and Britain, but he also outlined plans for a China-US Tourism Summit in Hangzhou, China in September of this year.
Brand USA has undertaken a number of significant marketing programs in an effort to boost visitation. They have a 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year TV station, GO USA TV, which can be found on Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire.
