United Mileage Plus members are now eligible for discounted memberships with Clear, whose biometric security clearance machines provide expedited TSA clearance at 31 U.S. airports.
Under an agreement announced Monday, United has made an undisclosed equity investment in Clear. Delta also has a stake in Clear.
The United investment will help Clear launch service at Newark Liberty later this summer and expand its offerings at Houston Bush Intercontinental, the companies said. United is also supporting Clear’s efforts to gain entry into Chicago O’Hare, which is the largest U.S. airport in which no Clear security clearance lanes are available.
As part of the deal, Mileage Plus members can join Clear for $119 annually, compared with the standard membership cost of $179. An annual membership of $109 will be available to United Premier Platinum, Gold and Silver members, while United’s highest tier loyalty members — those with Premier 1K or Global Services status — will get free Clear membership.
Clear members save time by waiting in their own lanes at TSA checkpoints and by not having to present identification. Instead, Clear kiosks recognize individuals via a biometric fingerprint or iris check.
