In the wake of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union, United Airlines has revealed plans to reduce capacity on flights to some UK cities from its hubs in Newark (EWR) and Washington-Dulles (IAD). Specifically, the airline will suspend its Dulles to Manchester service this winter. Further, United expressed that it will downgauge at least one of the three daily Dulles-London Heathrow (LHR) flights, which are currently operated with a mix of 757 and 777 aircraft.
From its Newark hub, United has indicated that it will reduce service to Birmingham (BHX), but said that it will not make any reductions on the vitally important, business-heavy Newark-London Heathrow route. The airline reiterated that summer bookings remain strong, especially for leisure travel.
This reduction in capacity is almost surely in response to the ‘Brexit’ decision, which has made the UK cheaper for American travelers, but also the US more expensive for British travelers. Delta Air Lines has followed suit and also indicated that it will be cutting capacity by about 6% in the winter due to the pound’s weakness against the dollar.
