Tourvest plans to open new lodges in East Africa and also to refurbish existing products.
This comes as bookings to the region continue to rise. Tour operators have reported an increase in bookings of between 15% and 50% for 2016 compared with last year, while forward bookings are also on the up.
Given the revival of interest in the East African region, Tourvest will open two new five-star lodges in Tanzania – in Tarangirei National Park and the Central Serengeti – within the next two years.
The company is also doing an extensive refurbishment of Lemala Wildwaters, on an island on the River Nile near Jinja in Uganda. Hydro-electric power will be taken to the island and will also provide electricity to the neighbouring communities.
Gary Elmes, CEO of Tourvest’s Accommodation and Activities division, says the company has seen a 25% increase in lodge bookings. Leanne Haigh, Lemala Chief Executive and Director of Operations, says forward bookings are also ahead of the previous year.
Elmes attributes the increase to improved perceptions of the region and also highlights an increase in international flights direct to Kilimanjaro.
