A NEW glass skywalk – the “Coiling Dragon Cliff” – that snakes around the side of Tianmen Mountain opened to the public on Monday, attracting hordes of selfie-taking tourists in its first three days of operation.
The glass bridge has a drop of 300 meters and overlooks Tongtian Avenue, a mountain road with 99 turns that stretches up the cliff. A cable car transports people from a nearby train station to the peak of the mountain range.
The bridge – only 1.6-meter wide – has had daredevil tourists leaning precariously on the railing, taking selfies against views of the breath-taking mountainous range.
The bridge’s strength was tested in June when officials smashed part of the glass surface with a sledgehammer, and a second test saw a car full of passengers being driven on the bridge.
The “Coiling Dragon Cliff” is the third bridge of its kind in the Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area. Meanwhile, the world’s longest glass-floored bridge will soon open to public at the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, and will have a 430-meter drop.
