Just two and a half years after entering South Africa, Uber has gained in popularity with tourists.
According to Yolisa Mashilwane, Head of Public Policy for Uber South Africa, tourists make up nearly 30% of the Uber trips taken in the country. Speaking at a policy symposium last week, she said: “While we do not measure the percentage of rides requested by tourists across regions in the country, recent research into tourist usage of our services found that, in 2015, international riders made up almost 29% of total bookings in South Africa.”
According to Mashilwane, Uber appeals to global tourists because of its familiarity, safety and convenience. “Riders can not only share their details and estimated arrival times with others but can also receive detailed information about their driver, vehicle and route before they step inside the vehicle.”
