Australia saw an 11% increase in international arrivals in 2016, with visits from the U.S. up 16%. Tourism Australia officials discussed the statistics and other topics on Monday, the opening day of the 38th annual Australia Tourism Exchange, held in Sydney.
Of last year’s 8.3 million visitors, New Zealand continued to be Australia’s leading source market and saw a 3% visitor increase. Visitors from China were the second-largest source market, with arrivals increasing 17% in 2016. The U.S. is Australia’s fourth-largest source market, behind the U.K.
Officials discussed Tourism Australia’s continuing efforts to promote the country’s aquatic coastal attractions as well as the country’s sponsorship of this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony, held last month in Melbourne as part of Australia’s increased promotion of its culinary scene.
The Australia Tourism Exchange attracts over 2,500 delegates from across Australia and 30 international markets.
