I may not look Asian, but I am. Even if you can’t pinpoint my background, I’m obviously a visible minority. Luckily for me, though, I’ve never really experienced what I’d call racism, or at least not that I’m aware of. I’m not sure if that’s attributable to my ambiguous look — I can pass as local in many Asian and Spanish-speaking countries — or my own ignorance. I have, however, had many experiences like the above (“No, where are you really from?”, “Do you speak any other language than Canadian?”). Everyone is so much more than the colour of their skin or their gender identity. I recommend talking to each other just as fellow human beings.
