JAPAN prides itself on being one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world.
These days, the Japanese are even planning future wooden skyscrapers.
Caring for the environment runs in their veins, and one seemingly posh hotel can relate.
Located in Shibuya, Tokyo, Trunk (Hotel) is the epitome of still water runs deeps.
On the outside, it looks like a luxurious, minimalist structure but on the inside, every piece of material, amenity, and product have been carefully thought of.
Housed in two four-storey buildings, the hotel has 15 modern, uniquely styled rooms that feature floor-to-ceiling windows, flat screen TVs, and sitting areas.
Every room is uniquely one-of-a-kind, furnished with upcycled furniture and organic made-in-Japan toiletries.
And that’s just the beginning. Guests will be surprised to hear about the extent of the hotel’s attention to detail.
For example, Trunk (Hotel) champions the innovative use of recycled materials, repurposing wood from old Japanese homes for design accents throughout the buildings.
If you paid close attention to the labels on the bean bag chairs on the outdoor public terrace, you’d see that they’re made from old ship’s sails.
Each label describes said bean bag’s history: Name of ship, harbor, sail type, sail manufacturer, and edition number.
Stepping into a brightly lit hotel room (thanks to the hotel’s floor-to-ceiling windows, also another eco-friendly feature), guests will find that the in-room snacks and drinks provided at the minibar are sourced from independent and organic Japanese suppliers.
Even the crockery items are made from recycled materials.
So don’t be too surprised to find that you’re sipping your organic ginger ale from a glass that was once a fluorescent light bulb.

Washing up in the bathroom will definitely put a smile on the environmentalist’s face as there are Trunk-branded organic amenities.
The best part is, if you like what you’re using, it’s for sale at the store downstairs.
After a shower, perhaps step outside to the living room to pick out one of the secondhand books on the shelf, courtesy of the hotel.
And if you’re famished, head on over to the hotel’s Trunk (Kitchen), which offers all-day dining from a menu that includes vegan and gluten-free options.
Talk about soul food.
As the hotel also strongly believes in the concept of socializing, don’t head off to bed without first dropping by the lounge and bar for a quick drink, and maybe make a friend or two.
Looking for a luxe staycation or a getaway to search your soul and be one with Mother Nature? Then this is perfect for you.
The eco-chic Trunk (Hotel) is a 10-minute walk from Meiji-jingumae Station and a 12-minute walk from Takeshita Street.
