THAILAND wants to capitalize on the lucrative global film industry by introducing a marketing campaign to lure international producers.
The department wants Thailand to eventually be known as the “World’s Best Film Location”.
This year’s campaign focuses on eight tourism “clusters” in Thailand and will include a series of activities and projects such as a short film competition for international students and cinema screenings of renowned movies filmed in Thailand.
“We have many beautiful destinations in Thailand and the international film industry is directly linked to Thailand’s tourism,” Thai Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said.
“This not only brings in a large amount of money into our country, but also helps promote Thailand’s beautiful destinations internationally. TIFDF 2017… aims to attract those in the film industry to shoot films in Thailand.”
Oxford Business Group reported Thailand has long been a prime destination for location shoots. Last year, the country hosted 779 separate overseas shoots, a 7.6 percent increase on 2015.
Productions included commercials, music videos and feature films – most overseas productions were filmed by crews from Japan, China, India and Europe.
Some high-grossing feature films that have used Thailand as a backdrop include The Beach, The Hangover 2, and Lost in Thailand.
Thai officials projected film tourism will generate over US$90 million in revenue for the country, a figure largely contributed by rebates, support and marketing for producers.
Popular films are known to bring in tourism revenues to featured sites, and a recent case is the surge of interest in Los Angeles following the success of La La Land. According to Skift, the film sparked interest in a number of iconic attractions featured in the film including Griffith Observatory.
