SVALBARD IS AN ALMOST OTHERWORLDLY place. It is so far north that it exists either in total darkness or total light. It’s a stretch of icy rock that has more polar bears than people. It is not an easy place to live. So it’s crazy that the future of the human race may well depend on its continued existence. Svalbard is home to the Global Seed Vault.
The Global Seed Vault is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a place where scientists can keep seeds in a safe, remote, cold place. If a massive, global catastrophe happens, and certain plants die out, we’ll be able to go up to Svalbard, and retrieve the seeds. The seed vault may end up being at the front lines of human survival during the upheaval that could come with catastrophic climate change. GoPro created this short documentary on the Svalbard Seed Vault, and it’s pretty fascinating. Give it a watch.
