STARWOOD HOTELS & RESORTS has signed on two boutique properties in Singapore under its Luxury Collection and Tribute Portfolio umbrellas.
Hotel Vagabond, the latest Tribute portfolio property, is an art-focused hotel on a row of shop houses in Singapore’s Little India, and will be rebranded in October as a result of the Starwood partnership.
Rajit Sukumaran, senior vice president, acquisitions and development Asia-Pacific, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, told TTG Asia: “Tribute allows us to take on independent, designer-led hotels, and keep them independent.”
Sukumaran added that while independent hotels do well on their own, a partnership like this could mean an enhanced global distribution system, loyalty programs and sales channels, all of which can be provided by Starwood.
Many of Starwood’s Preferred Guest members have expressed interest in independent hotels but have reservations about quality, safety and loyalty programs. Therefore, a range like Tribute Portfolio is a win-win partnership for both Starwood and Hotel Vagabond.

Meanwhile, Duxton Club under Luxury Collection is housed in a pre-war colonial building in Tanjong Pagar. Under the Duxton range are two properties within walking distance of each other: The Duxton House on Duxton Road, and Duxton Terrace on Murray Street.
Duxton House will be an exclusive 50-room hotel set to start operating next year, while the repurposed Duxton Terrace will open in July next year.
Sukumaran said that Tanjong Pagar is an up-and-coming area in Singapore, what with so much rich history and culture to its name.
“Having this luxury offering there is going to sit very well with the whole expansion plan of the CBD. It’s a great location for us,” he said.
The Luxury Collection will debut three properties in Asia soon: Meishi Lake in Changsha next month, and two properties in India and Hakone, Japan next year.
