So far, the Starwood-Marriott merger has been a positive move overall — at least in the eyes of the consumer. Right after the merger was finalized, SPG and Marriott Rewards members were able to link their accounts, and since then, the two have announced that you’re now able to earn bonus Starpoints at Marriott properties and vice versa. But, as is always expected following a merger, there are always some negative effects — specifically when it comes to jobs.
Starwood Preferred Guest informed the state of Connecticut that it plans to lay off approximately 163 employees by close of business on December 31, 2016. The Stamford-based company told the state in a letter that the majority of layoffs would be for managers, directors, vice presidents and senior vice presidents. However, it also indicated that some of the layoffs will include rank and file workers like administrative and executive assistants, specialists in the supply chain and those in design and brand management.
Currently, there are about 660 employees who work for Starwood in Stamford, so this layoff announcement represents about 25% of its workforce there. While this is surely not welcome news for anyone, Starwood’s letter to the state said that employees were notified that Marriott would be posting jobs in the coming weeks. Although that’d require a move from Connecticut to Washington, D.C., where Marriott is based, the new jobs at Marriott could potentially be great fits for the Starwood employees.
Hopefully, there aren’t more layoffs announced for the coming months. That being said, it looks like there may be some good opportunities for the former employees at Marriott.
