The St Helena Government (SHG) has launched a request for proposals to provide air services to the island.
The government is looking to award a contract to one or more carriers to provide a minimum once-a-week flight to St Helena from an international hub airport or an airport with direct connections to the UK or South Africa. The contract will also include a service between St Helena and Ascension Island.
Rodger Foster, CEO and MD of Airlink, told Tourism Update that it was interested in submitting a proposal. “We weren’t able to deliver services previously, but we think that in the future we may have that capability.”
Currently, the RMS St Helena operates a service from Cape Town to St Helena. Foster says Airlink’s proposal is expected to replace it with flights between Cape Town and St Helena.
The new air service will be operated using Runway 02. Its wind conditions differ compared with Runway 20 and will require an operator to use an aircraft type capable of landing under these conditions.
Comair was awarded the contract to provide air services between Johannesburg and St Helena in 2015. The flights were to use Runway 20, but have been suspended due to turbulence and wind shear.
Stuart Cochrane, Executive Manager: Business Processes at Comair, says the contract with the government is still in place and the new tender for air services is an interim measure while a long-term solution for Runway 20 is explored. “We remain very much engaged with SHG and our discussions have been and will continue to be constructive and outcomes-focused.”
He also says the airline is reviewing the recent tender and has not decided if it will submit a proposal.
