LAS VEGAS — Southwest Airlines will enhance its California network with the introduction of 12 new routes next spring.
The airline announced the routes Monday as it extended its flight schedule through June 1 of next year.
San Jose will have five new daily routes, with service to Boise, Idaho; Spokane, Wash.; St. Louis; and Houston Hobby beginning April 8. Southwest will begin a daily Orlando route on May 6.
The carrier will also introduce three new daily routes in Sacramento and one in San Francisco. Flights from Sacramento to St. Louis and Austin start April 8; Sacramento-Orlando service starts May 6. San Francisco-Austin service begins April 8.
Speaking at the Boyd Group International Aviation Forecast Summit, Southwest chief revenue officer Andrew Watterson stressed that Southwest remains the market leader in California despite competition from legacy airlines American, Delta and United, and despite the merger of Alaska Airlines and Virgin America.
Southwest, he said, offers more tha 60% of intra-California flights and operates more than 30% of out-of-state flights, more than any other carrier.
“Our significant advantage today is increased,” Watterson said.
Along with the new daily routes, Southwest announced weekly international service from San Jose and Sacramento to Cabo San Lucas. The carrier will also fly twice weekly between San Diego and Puerto Vallarta. All three of those routes launch March 10.
