Tanzania is planning to use golf as a way to attract more tourists. This was announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism at this year’s Southern Circuit Karibu Utalii Golf Challenge, which concluded at Mufindi Golf Club on Sunday, July 29.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism has been working in conjunction with the Iringa Regional Commissioner’s office to develop the attractions and facilities in the area. The Iringa Regional Commissioner’s office organized the tournament, which saw over 80 golfers from around Africa compete in the inaugural tournament.
Acting Director of the Ministry, Deogratius Mdamu, said: “This tournament is meant to drive sports enthusiasts to the southern part of the country, which, apart from this event, has the unexplored tourism attractions.” He said the government hoped to use this event to drive year-round tourism to the Southern Highlands area.
Yeckonia Chaula, a veteran golf champion from the Mufindi Golf Club, said events like this were successful in exposing unknown regions to the rest of the world and congratulated the government on its efforts to promote tourism in the southern region.
