Snow is making travel difficult for those in the Northeast, with impacts expected to continue into the weekend. Not many airlines are helping travelers avoid the situation either. Only American Airlines and Delta have issued waivers allowing free flight changes (see options below).
For Friday, FlightAware has tracked 328 cancellations in the US, including:
- LaGuardia (LGA): 96 cancellations, 472 delays
- Newark (EWR): 88 cancellations, 465 delays
- Washington DC Reagan (DCA): 43 cancellations, 229 delays
- New York’s JFK: 25 cancellations, 458 delays
- Boston (BOS): 16 cancellations
If you get stuck with a cancelled or severely delayed flight due to weather, airlines aren’t responsible for paying for meals or hotels. But, some top cards have flight delay/cancellation insurance that can reimburse you for weather issues, including the Citi Prestige ($500 per passenger for 3+ hour delay), the Chase Sapphire Reserve ($500 per ticket for 6+ hour or overnight delay) and Chase Sapphire Preferred ($500 per ticket for 12+ hour or overnight delay).
Here are the airports covered by the waivers:
American Airlines
- Travel date: December 15-16
- Must have purchased your ticket by December 15.
- Rebook travel anytime between December 15-19.
- You can’t change your origin or destination city. Must rebook in same class or pay the difference.
Delta
- Travel date: December 15-16
- Ticket must be reissued, and rebooked travel must begin by December 19.
- When rescheduled travel occurs beyond December 19, 2017, the change fee will be waived. However, a difference in fare may apply. Final travel must be completed by end of ticket validity, one year from date of original issue.
- If travel is not able to be rescheduled within these guidelines, customers may cancel their reservation and apply any unused value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket for a period of one year from the original ticket issuance. Applicable change fee and fare difference will apply for new travel dates.
No waivers yet from JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, United or Virgin America.
