THERE’S no one airport in the world at the center of such acclaim and adoration as Singapore’s Changi.
Recently, the airport hit a new milestone for welcoming its one billionth passenger since it began operating in 1981, keeping it on course to hit its target of 60 million passengers this year.
According to Channel News Asia, the airport handled 58.7 million passengers last year – an all-time high that looks set to be topped this year.
Passenger traffic in Changi was boosted by visitors from all regions except the Middle East, while many countries in the airport’s top markets including India and Malaysia registered double digit growth, according to a press statement released by the airport.
Changi is known to many travelers as a hub for shopping, entertainment and art, something most other airports can’t brag about.
The now-iconic teardrop installation has made its way onto many social media accounts; the airport cinema screens blockbusters to while you during layovers; the nature garden will soothe the eyes with lush greenery and over 1,000 tropical butterflies; and the fish spa area will let you get your tired feet nibbled by dead skin.
On top of that, a new tech innovation center aims to boost productivity and service standards, including a smart wheelchair system, an automated guided vehicle, and a robotic chef.
This is in tandem with Changi’s ambitious expansion plans to more than double its capacity by 2025 and handle over 135 million passengers a year.
