A 63-YEAR-OLD baggage handler at Singapore’s Changi Airport, Tay Boon Keh, was found to have swapped tags on hundreds of bags, sending the luggage to the wrong destinations, according to Reuters.
He did not explain the reason for his actions, but intends to plead guilty, the court document said.
Tay was charged in court on Tuesday with 286 counts of mischief, according to Straits Times. The next hearing is set on October 17, and if convicted, he can be jailed for up to one year and fined for each charge.
Changi Airport is largely considered the world’s best airport and handled 58.7 million passengers last year – an all-time high that looks set to be topped this year.
The airport’s new fourth terminal will begin operations on October 31 and will service nine airlines including Cathay Pacific Airways, Cebu Pacific Air, Korean Air, Spring Airlines and Vietnam Airlines.
The airport’s new terminal is in tandem with its ambitious expansion plans to more than double its capacity by 2025 and handle over 135 million passengers a year.
