Silver Airways has become the first U.S. carrier to add the ATR 72-600 to its fleet.
The Florida-based carrier inaugurated the 72-seat aircraft Saturday on a flight between Tampa and Pensacola. The introduction follows Silver’s unveiling in April of its first 46-seat ATR 42-600.
To date, Silver has taken delivery of its first seven of at least 20 ATR-600s, including six of the smaller 42-600 variant along with the new 72-600. The carrier also has an option for up to 30 additional ATRs. The aircraft are replacing Silver’s fleet of 34-seat twin propeller Saab aircraft.
Silver says the aircraft enable quicker flights. The planes are purpose-built for short- and medium-haul flying.
The carrier said it will initially use the ATR-72-600 to and from destinations in Florida and the Bahamas before introducing the new aircraft on Caribbean routes next year.
