The resort, which only opened in 2016, first announced its plans to introduce the new immersive addition to the park late last year, but to avoid the creation of speculative rumors, they held back on when they suspected the themed land would open. Toy Story is one of the most popular Disney franchises in China, and the park is looking to attract many new visitors.
“As you can tell from the logo, Toy Story Land at Shanghai Disneyland will be both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese, making it a one-of-a-kind experience for our guests,” Thomas Smith, editorial content director of Disney Parks, wrote on the Disney Parks Blog.
“Everyone’s favorite toys from one of the most popular franchises ever will come to life and play in a fully immersive land with three attractions and a themed character greeting area.”
Among the fun to be had at the new part of the park will be a Slinky Dog carousel, Rex Racer, Woody’s Round-Up and a uniquely themed character greeting area so guests can finally meet their favorite characters.
The land will also have an Al’s Toy Barn and Toy Box Café, letting visitors grab souvenirs such as Mr and Mrs Potato Heads and sample some Toy Story-themed treats.
Rex’s Racers, which has already been installed, is set to be a fast thrill-seekers’ ride, while Woody’s Round-Up is rumored to be a spinner ride, sure to make you dizzy.
The creation of this new land is being made possible through a collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering, Pixar Animation Studios and highly-skilled international and Chinese designers, engineers, artists and cultural advisors.
10,000 workers already operate the park that has seen 11 million visitors in its first year of opening. This number is only set to grow as Disney Toy Story Land opens next year.
Recruitment specifically for the Toy Story Land has already started, and staff and cast members will soon begin their extensive training.
Those selected to portray the Toy Story characters are expected learn all the key phrases off by heart and never break character, even if a child attempts to insensately tug at Woody’s pull cord.
While Shanghai Disneyland Park only ranks in the middle sector of most profitable and visited theme parks in China, on a global scale it is set to be the most successful Disney theme park of them all.
“We were arguing that this was on pace to be the most profitable Disney park globally,” Barton Crockett, senior analyst at FBR Capital Markets, told Squawk Box.
