VIETNAM recently issued a national code of conduct containing eight do’s and don’ts for international and domestic tourists, tour operators, and locals.
Incidences of poor behavior have been reported in tourist-heavy areas, including a recent report of visitors throwing rocks and bottles of urine at tourist gondolas crossing the city’s Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Chinese tourist boom in Vietnam has also contributed to occurrences of bad behavior on the part of Chinese tour guides operating in Vietnam.
An example cited by South China Morning Post said: “For instance, the guide tells them while Vietnam is no longer a part of China and has claimed its independence, it still depends on China and pays tribute to it.
“Or that the city’s My Khe Beach, a broad sweep of white sand once dubbed China Beach by American soldiers, really belongs to China.”
While this is the first time a Vietnam-wide conduct has been issued, major tourist cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hoi An have issued their own set of rules. A similar scheme is expected to be carried out in Hanoi in the future.
