SAA has refuted claims made by City Press that it is in talks with Emirates or Etihad to form a strategic partnership.
City Press reported that UAE Ambassador Mahash Alhameli said the UAE embassy had been facilitating talks between SAA and the two gulf carriers regarding a potential investment opportunity. According to City Press, the ambassador said discussions had begun before the UAE pledged to invest $10 billion (R135 billion) into some of South Africa’s major state-owned enterprises earlier this month.
SAA said on Monday that while it was in talks with airlines about commercial agreements, the possibility of these airlines investing in SAA had not been discussed.
“SAA has met Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Kenya Airways, Air Mauritius, United Airlines and Singapore Airlines. These discussions have been purely about commercial agreements such as interline, codeshare, cargo as well as the possibility of these airlines taking some of our excess flight deck and cabin crew.”
In 2014 there was also speculation that SAA was in talks with Etihad about a strategic investment.
