AMERICAN food writer, cookbook author, and former editor of Saveur James Oseland said that Malaysia – Penang in particular – is “beyond the shadow of a doubt one of the most important food destinations on the planet”.
The journalist-turned-food writer said he couldn’t get enough of Malaysian food because of its variety of flavors and the unique marriage of cultures that have resulted in cuisines unlike any other in Asia.
James first touched down in Penang in 1982 and is in town for the fifth time. He said that even as time has passed, the food quality in the state remains the same despite the changing landscapes.
“It is wonderful how the food is being cooked. The atmosphere is simply amazing and the competition between eateries to serve the best food makes them maintain the quality.”

The writer is currently working on a series of books that illustrate the culinary history and tales of each country he visits, and he plans to kick off the series with Malaysia.
He also believes that the best of Malaysian food is found in home kitchens. “I think it’s there, when you’re watching a home cook prepare a meal and then when you’re eating his or her food, that’s when you really begin to understand the great poetry of Malaysian cooking,” he said.
Surprisingly, James also took to durian, Malaysia’s king of fruits. The thorny fruit has been largely divisive among tourists, with most repulsed by its “pungent” stench. “It’s quite amazing, beyond amazing,” he said of his experience eating fresh-off-the-tree durian in Balik Pulau.
