WAIKIKI, known for its lively beaches, is also a bustling hub for entertainment.
Naturally, upmarket hotels line the picturesque coastline jostling for a prime location. Among them, but uniquely positioned with clear views of the Ala Wai Yacht Harbour and the Pacific Ocean, is the luxury Prince Waikiki.
Formerly known as the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club, the resort unveils a new property at the end of March following a US$55.4 million renovation. Much of the hotel’s interior and public areas were redeveloped as part of the project.
The inspiration for the design and rebranding was drawn from its sense of place – the hotel’s connection to the natural organic environment through the Piˋinaio and the ocean, but also to Hawaiian culture as a place for people to gather and celebrate.
This holistic transformation is immediately evident as you enter the spacious lobby. Delicately strung from the ceiling and extending the length of the room is a bespoke installation by artist Kaili Chun called Hulali i ka lā, which means “glistening in the sun”.
Employees and loyal guests sculptured each of the 850 hand-hammered copper pieces that represent the belly fins of hinana fish swimming in a flowing stream.
All 563 of the remodeled guestrooms are now fitted with fully-operational floor-to-ceiling-windows, which provide sweeping ocean views and the allure of a soothing sea breeze.
Across the walls, hand-painted murals depicting the native naio flower add a personal touch to each space. The rooms are also blessed with an airy marble bathroom, a comfortable seating area, and modern amenities.
For an enhanced experience, opt for the Prince Waikiki Club Rooms on the top floor. The hotel’s premier accommodation promises unobstructed views of the Pacific’s deep blue waters and the yachts that neatly line the harbor.
These rooms also benefit from access to the exclusive Prince Waikiki Club Lounge. Situated by the poolside, the private club lounge is a haven offering extensive views across the marina.
Complimentary food is served throughout the day – hot breakfast entrees in the morning, tempting appetizers in the evening. Plus, as the sun slips beneath the skyline, there’s no better place than the club lounge lanai to enjoy a cold beverage.
Outside, the Muliwai Deck area too has been refurbished. The pool now boasts a flowing infinity edge, reflecting the hotel’s connection to the ocean. Private cabanas provide a peaceful spot to unwind and take in the rolling sea views.
In the adjacent Ala Moana Tower, a new fitness center offers high-tech equipment and a selection of free weights. Perfect for when you want to shake off those calories from one too many mojitos.
For event planners, the Muliwai Deck also offers 3,000 square feet of versatile outdoor entertainment space. Elsewhere in the hotel, seven further function areas are available, each providing state-of-the-art equipment and access to a host of on-site services.
Of course, weddings too can be fulfilled by the hotel. Ceremonies can be held indoors in the newly revamped Piˋinaio Ballroom – a multi-functional meeting space that can seat up to 420 people – or outdoors at The Bird of Paradise amidst the manicured grounds of the Golf Club.
No stay at the hotel is complete without a meal at the 100 Sails Restaurant and Bar, which reopened last November. Combining a sophisticated setting with breath-taking ocean views and the chance to sample fresh island cuisine, it is a dining experience unlike any other.
Choose between the Signature Buffet or the extensive a la carte menu, which includes local delicacies like Ahi poke and Huli-Huli chicken. To round off your stay, devour a tropical concoction at the restaurant’s new bar.
