President of Botswana, Ian Khama, has called for co-operative responsibility to conserve tourism resources in the country.
Speaking in the US, he said non-governmental conservation organisations, the government and the private sector should work together to bring about success.
“I have learned in government that if you have committed leadership you can achieve more than the other two sectors combined,” said the president. He said Botswana was trying to set an example when it came to sustainability and conservation and protecting the flora and fauna.
He reiterated Botswana’s commitment to fight poaching with maximum security and said Botswana was not kind to poachers and they knew it. The country used all security services, from police to army, intelligence as well as correctional services.
President Khama also mentioned the importance of environmental impact assessments for all infrastructure that is being developed. “As we develop our countries we should do it with the natural resources in mind and ensure it is done in a sustainable way.”
The president was awarded the International Division’s Global Citizen Award in recognition of promoting conservation.
