If pop/R&B singer Charlie Puth only had more time, he’d be burning some serious points and miles. However, Puth, 24, constantly has to combine work and travel. Here, the talented musician, who possesses perfect pitch, reveals what gear he must have before departing for a trip, what he once learned during an ill-fated vacation in St. Thomas and where not to place him during a flight.
What’s the best trip you’ve ever taken?
The most fun trip for me was when I went to Copenhagen. It was the first show on my European tour and I was walking around eating ice cream and watching peacocks walk around. Copenhagen is the most magical place you’ll ever see and I’m looking forward to going back there someday. If I had to recommend any city for anyone to visit, it would be there.
Where haven’t you been yet that you want to visit?
I still haven’t been to Australia. I’ve been so busy that I’ve yet to make it there, but I understand it’s a must-visit. I have so many fans in Australia and I hear that it’s so beautiful.
What do you need for a trip?
My portable studio: my beats, a microphone and a notebook. I would also like to have access to a piano.
Last passport stamp?
London.
Favorite Airline?
Delta.
Favorite hotel?
The St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel is incredible. It’s next to this beautiful railway station. It is unreal. The gothic-revival style hotel is just beautiful. It’s centrally located in London and is just stunning. I would recommend it to anyone. Use points if you can. Since I travel a lot, I stay in so many hotels that I have to give you more than one. Another hotel that really impressed me is the Hotel Café Royal. It’s also in a great location in London and it’s just outrageous. The Mandarin Oriental in Paris is another hotel that’s unbelievably beautiful.
What was your worst travel experience?
It’s something that happened to me before I became famous. It was a trip to St. Thomas with my family years ago. We cheaped out on airline tickets and got stuck in St. Thomas for two extra days. The lesson I learned after that experience is to never travel in anything less than business class.
Two extra days in St. Thomas doesn’t sound so bad.
When it’s time to leave, it’s time to leave. If we had more time, it would be great to stay in a place like St. Thomas, but when you’re all set to go and you can’t go, that’s a problem. It’s all about time.
You probably don’t have much time to fly around for fun as you’d like because of your career.
That’s so true. I have so much going on with the new album . I have promo for the next week and then there’s the tour. But yeah, I would like to travel for fun. When I said I wanted to go to Australia, it would be great to go just on a trip, but what I envision when I think of Australia is performing there and seeing some of it when I’m not onstage.
Are you a points guy?
Yes. I’m something like Double Executive Diamond on Delta. I could fly around for free right now if I had the time. I could go to so many places since I’ve racked up so many points.
Window or aisle?
It doesn’t matter, as long as they don’t put me by the bathroom. I would like to avoid that. I’m good with anyplace else on a plane. I’m pretty easy.
