Sexual harassment has been a hot-button topic during an already-heated election year — and with one swift passenger removal, Alaska Airlines has shown that the carrier won’t stand for it.
According to a recent article by Business Insider, an Alaska Airlines flight getting ready to depart from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) last Sunday was interrupted when a male passenger verbally harassed a female flight attendant during her safety presentation.
Amber Nelson, a fellow passenger on the flight, wrote about the incident on her Facebook page in a post that has since gone viral. “Before takeoff from SeaTac the flight attendants ran through their safety rules as they always do,” Nelson wrote. “Not all of us were paying very close attention. But a man in the row behind me changed all that by calling out ‘ooh, sexy!’ in response to a female flight attendant demonstrating how to use the life vest.”
Nelson went on to explain how the man was sitting in the middle seat, between two women who “were clearly uncomfortable.” Before any passenger had a chance to respond to the man’s catcalling, the flight attendant stopped in the middle of her safety demo, approached the passenger and told him to be respectful. According to Nelson, he responded by saying, “‘C’mon, I’m just playing with you!’”
About 10 to 15 minutes later, the man was calmly escorted off the plane, claiming that he hadn’t done anything wrong.
The airline’s actions clearly left a positive impression on Nelson and her fellow passengers.
“I felt honored as a patron of the airline — and as a woman — because Alaska Airlines supported their staff and those of us on board who were demeaned by another passenger’s juvenile and exceedingly disrespectful behavior,” Nelson wrote.
