MALAYSIA’S Malindo Air snagged the coveted Asia Pacific Regional Airline of the Year at the 2016 CAPA Asia Pacific Aviation Awards of Excellence held in Singapore.
“With a rapid expanding network through the continents of Asia and Australia, we are receiving global recognition for the indisputable comfort and premium in-flight services offered with economical flight rates,” he added.
To commemorate the win, the airline is giving away one million promotional seats with air fares starting from RM69 within domestic destinations in Malaysia.
Overall, Malaysia recorded growth in passenger traffic this year and is projecting a five percent increase in 2017. The growth is owing to the influx of Chinese tourists and encouraging development from the Indian subcontinent.
Malaysia welcomed more than 1.4 million Chinese arrivals this year alone, and is looking to hit the two million mark before 2016 wraps up.
In a separate Reuters report, the industry’s influential investors said that the region had yet to see a truly low-cost carrier despite AirAsia and Lion Air growing significantly in recent years.
Bill Franke, co-founder and managing partner of Phoenix-based Indigo Partners, said there was still a gap in Asia’s fast-growing budget market for airlines with even fewer frills.
Franke said, “There is no really, true low-cost model in India, China… You have major flag carriers who try to move downstream by and large they have been unsuccessful. Sooner or later, the inefficiencies of larger airlines bleed down.”
