ON regular days, domestic flights in Malaysia is friendly to the wallet but like many other places, that affordability soon dissipates during peak periods where prices can get astronomical.
The Sun quoted Deputy Transport Minister Ab Aziz Kaprawi as saying that the prices could increase exponentially during holiday periods.
The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom), he said, was instructed to conduct a study introducing the controlled prices domestic flights.
“The average flight ticket price from peninsular to Sabah and Sarawak is around RM160 (US$40).”
“During the festive period, a study by Mavcom has found that the ticket price can increase by five times,” he said in parliament recently.

“Mavcom is in the process of setting up ceiling prices for domestic flights, due for completion by mid-2018,”
The minister was responding to a question from an opposition lawmaker Oscar Ling Chai Yew who asked about the role of Mavcom in regulating the price of flight tickets.
Ling wanted to know what steps the government was taking to ensure ticket prices from the peninsular to east Malaysia does not increase during busy periods.
“The government has failed to control the price. During such seasons, a flight from peninsular to Sabah and Sarawak can reach RM1,000 one way,” Ling said.
The minister also reminded travelers to plan their flights in advance to avoid high prices at the last minute, adding the price of flights tickets were set by the aviation companies based on several factors, including market demand, economic situation, and operational cost.
