Bushtracks Africa’s premium river safari vessel, Victoria, currently can not travel downstream due to low water levels on the Zambezi.
“The water is unusually low this year due to a region-wide drought,” says Megan Conn, Brand Manager. “According to the Zambezi River Authority, the flow of the Zambezi on September 23 was 195 cubic metres/second. Last year on the same date, the flow was 368 cubic metres/second. This indicates a major drop in water levels and therefore water-based activities will have to adapt accordingly.”
Conn emphasises that it is only the Victoria that will not be able to navigate above the Falls. “It is a larger vessel with a 20 pax capacity, and it sits lower in the water. Our Classic River Safari boats, the Darter and the Cormorant, are able to cater for 16 pax per boat. The boats are narrower and lighter, and are propelled by jet engines that allow the vessels to navigate in only 15 inches (38cm) of water, and are therefore still able to make it to the shallow waters above the Falls.”
The Livingstone Adventures water taxi service will also not be able to operate. Clients will be advised accordingly and road transfers will be organised.
