Yesterday was a rough day for air travel across the Northeast. Although the forecast didn’t call for more than nine inches of snow, some parts of the Northeast received over 20 inches. Airports were shuttered for hours at a time due to blizzard conditions. Long Island’s Islip was the airport that recorded the most snow from the storm — a total of 13.7 inches — leading to the cancellation of 46% of scheduled departures.
Other NYC airports and Boston were hit hard, leading to over 3,000 cancellations across just four airports:
- Boston/Logan Airport (BOS) recorded 10.7 inches at had 745 flights canceled
- La Guardia Airport (LGA): 10 inches and 822 flights canceled
- John F. Kennedy (JFK): 8.3 inches and 706 flights canceled
- Newark Liberty (EWR): 7.8 inches and 730 flights canceled
Overall, there were 3,704 flight cancellations across the US, most of which were due to this snowstorm. With all of those cancellations stranding some flight crews and aircraft out of position, there are still lingering cancellations and delays today:
