Kenya’s government is investing Ksh100bn (€896m) in infrastructure development around the country’s coast, Najib Balala, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism told delegates at the Magical Kenya Travel Expo in Nairobi on Wednesday.
According to Balala, this includes road infrastructure, improving the road from Malindi to Tsavo National Park and from Malindi to Lamu as well as Malindi Airport, which is being expanded to accommodate larger aircraft.
The country’s coast has suffered a tourism decline in recent years and Balala is hoping to encourage more arrivals to the coast. He said there had already been an increase in charter flights to Mombasa.
Ksh1,5bn (€13.44m) has also been invested this year in marketing the destination through the Kenya Tourism Board.
Balala said Ksh5bn (€44.8m) would be collected through a $10 airport service charge, which would also be invested back into the tourism sector, for development and promotion.
