Earlier this year, a JetBlue flight attendant attempted to sneak a suitcase full of 70 pounds of cocaine through security — and failed. Marsha Gay Reynolds, who tried to sneak the suitcase through Los Angeles Airport (LAX) in March, is expected to plead guilty in federal court to conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine. The charge carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison if convicted.
When Reynolds arrived at LAX, she met with a co-conspirator who gave her the cocaine. The Queens resident, who was 31 at the time, was a member of the Known Crewmember program, allowing her to scan her badge and pass through security without any further screening. Upon getting through the designated lane, she was set to meet back up with the co-conspirator and return the cocaine. However, Known Crewmembers can be selected for random screening, which is where Reynolds ran into an issue.
When the TSA agent pulled Reynolds aside for additional screening, the former NYU track athlete dropped her bags, removed her shoes and bolted. She then managed to somehow get on a flight back to New York where she surrendered a few days later. According to a court document, Reynolds was getting paid thousands of dollars to smuggle drugs through the TSA checkpoints at both LAX and New York’s JFK Airport.
