JAPAN’S tallest Ferris wheel started operating last Friday in a large retail and entertainment complex in Osaka.
The towering 123-meter structure – or Redhorse Osaka Wheel – has see-through floors in each of its 72 compartments so that passengers can see the ground below as they loom over the complex.
Not only do passengers get views of the Expocity complex, they’ll also be treated to panoramic views of Osaka Bay and the 300-meter skyscraper Abeno Harukas in Abeno Ward.
Motonari Yamazaki, a 9-year-old elementary schoolboy from the nearby Ibaraki city, said after riding the Ferris wheel, “I was scared but it was fun. I want to come here again.”
Each compartment is equipped with modern features including air conditioning units and touchscreen tablets that provide information on the park highlights. At night, each carriage lights up with floor-based LEDs.
In the case of an earthquake, the structure uses the world’s first base-isolated system to absorb the shock of tremors and therefore, minimizing its shaking.
Rides cost about 1,000 yen or about US$10 for both adults and children. Meanwhile, the commercial complex also houses a shopping mall, aquarium, zoo and museum.
