“SHALL we take the car or the helicopter?” is a sentence very few people get to ask on a daily basis. But the South Indian city of Bengaluru is offering some travelers a helicopter taxi service to and from the airport, in a bid to avoid the heavy traffic on the roads.
The current road traffic in Bengaluru means it could take up to three hours to get from the city to Kempegowda International Airport.
Considering travelers are generally advised to arrive at the airport two hours before their flight departs, some flyers are setting off from the city up to five hours before their flight is due to take off.
The helicopter taxi service could cut travel time to as little as 15 minutes and vicariously prepare flyers for the aviation travel that lies ahead.
The service plans to use just one Bell 407 helicopter until the service has established a positive reputation. These types of helicopters can carry up to six people and an adequate amount of luggage.
For the time being, however, only those traveling from the information technology hub of Electronic City to Kempegowda airport can hitch a helicopter lift.

As the traffic-avoiding-scheme grows, the service hopes to introduce other routes. The Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha expressed his hopes to see other cities adopt this idea as traffic around India worsens and unfortunate travelers miss their flights.
As of yet, the fare for this service has not been confirmed, but you can safely assume it will be much pricier than an average Indian taxi.
